N-back training

Is the letter the same as two steps back? N-back training challenges your working memory – from the easy 1-back to the tricky 3-back. ← All concentration exercises

How it works

1

Pick a level

Easy: 1-back (like the one right before) · Medium: 2-back · Hard: 3-back. Every round has 20 letters plus n.

2

Compare

Letters appear one after another. Press “Match” or space when the letter is the same as n steps back – otherwise nothing.

3

Evaluate

At the end you see matches found, matches missed and false alarms. Errors are misses plus false alarms.

Frequently asked questions

What is an n-back test?+

A well-known task from memory research: you keep the last n signs in mind all the time and compare them with the new one. It challenges working memory – the part of memory that holds information for a few seconds.

Does n-back training make you smarter?+

With practice you get clearly better at the task itself. Whether that carries over to other abilities is disputed in research. As a concentration exercise and brain workout it still works – and reaching the next level is fun.

How many errors are normal?+

Many manage 1-back almost without errors, some missed matches are normal at 2-back, and 3-back is hard for most at first. Move up only when you are sure on your level.

Are my results stored?+

Only in your browser – per level with time and errors. Nothing is uploaded.

The exercises are for practice and fun. They do not replace a diagnosis or therapy.
