Frequently asked questions
Do such tasks come up in aptitude tests?+
Yes, number sequences are a classic of aptitude and recruitment tests. Knowing the typical rules helps you spot them faster in a test.
Which rules are there?+
Constant steps (+7), doubling, alternating steps (+6, −3), growing steps (+1, +2, +3 …), the sum of the two numbers before, ×2 then +3, square numbers and two interleaved sequences.
How do I go about it?+
Write down the differences between the numbers. Equal: a plus sequence; growing: a growing sequence; alternating: an alternating one. If that does not help, compare every second number.
