How it works
Enter the points
Points scored and the maximum possible for the test or exam. This gives the percentage.
Pick the scale
US letter grades with plus and minus, the German IHK and school scale (1–6), German upper school with 0–15 points, or your own scale with your own cut-offs.
Table & average
The grading table shows from how many points each grade applies. Below, work out the average of several grades, weighted if you like.
Frequently asked questions
How do I turn points into a grade?+
Points scored ÷ maximum points × 100 gives the percentage. The grading scale says from which percentage each grade applies – on the common US scale 93 % and up is an A, 90 % an A−, 87 % a B+ and so on down to 60 % for a D−; below that is an F.
Which scale does my school use?+
That is up to the school or the teacher – cut-offs differ, some use 90/80/70/60 without plus and minus. With “Own scale” you enter the cut-offs your school uses.
How do German grades work?+
German grades go from 1 (very good) to 6 (insufficient); 4 is the lowest pass. The IHK scale of the chambers of commerce gives a 1 from 92 %, a 2 from 81 %, a 3 from 67 %, a 4 from 50 % and a 5 from 30 %. In the upper school there are 0–15 points, 15 to 13 points being a 1+, 1 and 1−.
How do I work out a weighted average?+
Multiply each grade by its weight, add everything up and divide by the sum of the weights. If tests count double, give them the weight 2. You can average percentages, grade points or German grades the same way.
Is the grade rounded?+
The percentage is not rounded: 92.9 % is an A− on the US scale. In the grading table you can allow half points. What counts is always the scale of your school.
