Private translator

Translate text between English, German, French, Spanish and more – right on your device. Your text is not sent to any translation service: either the translator built into your browser does the work, or a language model (Opus-MT) is downloaded once and then runs locally. Ideal for confidential text.

How it works

1

Enter text

Type or paste the text and pick the source and target language – or let the language be detected automatically.

2

Translate locally

The first time, the browser downloads the language model for this direction (about 105–130 MB) and keeps it. After that there is no waiting, and it works offline too.

3

Check & copy

The translation appears paragraph by paragraph. Copy it with one click or swap the languages for the way back.

Frequently asked questions

Is my text sent anywhere?+

No. The translation is computed in your browser; the text does not leave your device. The only downloads are the language model (from Hugging Face) and the runtime (from jsDelivr), once – or nothing at all if your browser has a built-in translator.

How good is the translation?+

Good for everyday text, e-mails and for understanding foreign-language text. It does not quite match the big online translators, though: idioms, technical language, very long sentences and names can go wrong. Please proofread important text.

Which languages work?+

German, English, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Russian, Ukrainian, Swedish and Czech in both directions; Polish and Turkish as source languages. Pairs without a model of their own (e.g. Italian → German) automatically go through English – that needs two models and costs some accuracy. In Chrome and Edge on a computer the built-in translator takes over, which covers more directions.

Why is the first start slower?+

Every language direction has its own model of about 105 to 130 MB. It is downloaded the first time and then stays in your browser’s storage. “Delete stored models” frees the space again.

Does it work offline?+

Yes, once the model for the direction you want has been loaded. After that you can open the page and translate without an internet connection.

Is there a length limit?+

No, but long text takes time: the text is split into groups of sentences and translated piece by piece – expect about a second per sentence. You can cancel at any time.

Can I translate whole documents or subtitles?+

Can the translation be read aloud?+

Yes – “🔊 Read aloud” reads the translation sentence by sentence. Only voices installed on your device are used; online voices that would send the text to their provider stay off. If there is no voice for the target language, you can install one in your system’s language settings (Windows: Settings → Time & language → Language, language pack with “Text-to-speech”; Android/iOS: Text-to-speech or Spoken content).
