Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a percentage?+
Part = base × percent ÷ 100. Example: 19% of 250 is 250 × 19 ÷ 100 = 47.5. The other way round, percent = part ÷ base × 100 and base = part × 100 ÷ percent.
How do I calculate a percentage change?+
Change in % = (new value − old value) ÷ old value × 100. A price going from 80 to 100 is +25%. Falling from 100 to 80 is −20% – the direction matters.
How do I reverse an increase or a discount?+
Divide by (1 + percent ÷ 100) to get the original value: 119 after a 19% increase was 119 ÷ 1.19 = 100 before. For a discount use a negative percentage, e.g. −20%.
What is the difference between percent and percentage points?+
If an interest rate rises from 2% to 3%, that is 1 percentage point more – but 50 percent more, because 1 is half of 2. Percentage points describe the gap between two percentages.
Can I calculate VAT too?+
Yes, with “Increase” (net + 19%) and “Original value” (gross back to net). For gross/net with all rates in Germany, Austria and Switzerland there is a separate VAT calculator.
