Fraction calculator
Work with two fractions or simplify one: the calculator shows every step – common denominator, expanding, simplifying by the greatest common divisor – and the result as fraction, mixed number and decimal.
How it works
Enter the fractions
Numerator above, denominator below the line. For mixed numbers like 2 ¾ put the whole number in front; a minus goes before the whole number or the numerator.
Pick the operation
Plus, minus, times, divided by – or “simplify”, then only the first fraction counts.
Read the steps
Each step is shown the way you would do it by hand. Below you turn decimals into fractions, repeating ones like 0.(3) too.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add two fractions?+
Bring both fractions to the same denominator (the least common multiple of the denominators), add the numerators and simplify. Example: ¾ + ⅚ = 9/12 + 10/12 = 19/12 = 1 7/12.
How do I multiply and divide fractions?+
Multiply: numerator times numerator, denominator times denominator. Divide: multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction – swap its numerator and denominator. Then simplify.
How do I simplify a fraction?+
Divide numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD). 18/24: the GCD is 6, so 18/24 = 3/4. If the GCD is 1, the fraction is already in lowest terms.
What do the brackets in 0.58(3) mean?+
The digits in brackets repeat for ever: 0.58(3) = 0.58333… Fractions whose simplified denominator has prime factors other than 2 and 5 give such repeating decimals.
How do I turn a decimal into a fraction?+
The digits after the point set the denominator: 0.375 = 375/1000 = 3/8. For repeating decimals like 0.(3) a trick with nines helps: 0.(3) = 3/9 = 1/3. The calculator does both below under “Decimal to fraction”.
